  UI'SU holds Congress on Student Welfare and Campus Concerns

The University of Ibadan Students' Union, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, held a congress at the Sub-Foyer, with proceedings commencing two hours later than scheduled after a quorum was formed.

The congress was led by the Students' Union president, Covenant Odedele, who stated that the Congress was to address students welfare and other pressing concerns. He commenced the session by addressing the state of the union, noting that their administration has spent almost 200 days in office.

The president spoke about the events, programs and initiatives his administration has organised and put in place, such as the freshers' week, GES transport initiative, town hall meeting and bursary programme for students.

After addressing the state of the union, students were given the opportunity to ask questions regarding the union. The questions about the Nelfund portal, closure time for transportation, sport facilities, campus security and the number of bursary programme beneficiaries were raised. The key questions asked during the Congress by most students were on the issues of financial misappropriation allegations, the suspended students and the power of the press. 

In addressing the number of bursary programme beneficiaries, the president stated that the discrepancies in the numbers was because after the deadline, the executives spent outside the union's pockets to assist some indigent students in paying their fees which was achieved through the help of some executives and students.

In response to the question raised by a student about the press reports, the president noted that "It is the duty of the press to ensure that reports are unbiased".

Replying to the allegations of financial misappropriation against three executive members, the president stated that the allegations were due to lack of communication. The Students' Union treasurer, Bioku Joshua said on the allegations made against him, that he disbursed the approved expenditure by the SRC and quoted the constitution to back up his claim.

The president also addressed the question raised by some students regarding the suspended students. He explained that they cannot sit over the case if the person involved has not appeared. According to him, “if the person refuses to appear, it only prolongs the case.” He further noted that both the Students’ Union and the committee have continued to reach out to the suspended student, stating, “from our end, we keep reaching out.”

The president concluded by announcing the upcoming Students' Union week and other ongoing projects in the university.
