 AFASIEC UI Conducts First-Ever Fully Online Election for 2025/2026 Academic Session

On Thursday, November 20, 2025, the Association of Faculty of Arts Students’ Independent Electoral Commission (AFASIEC) at the University of Ibadan conducted its first-ever fully online election for candidates vying for executive positions in the Faculty of Arts for the 2025/2026 academic session.

This marked a historic milestone in the faculty’s electoral process, as the election was held exclusively through an e-voting platform. The election exercise, which was strictly e-voting, had eligible voters receive voting links via their student emails within the stipulated voting hours. This allowed students to exercise their civic rights as bonafide AFAS members.

The exercise was originally scheduled for Saturday, November 15, 2025, but was postponed to Thursday, November 20, 2025, following a statement released on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, signed by the AFASIEC Chairperson, Adewuyi Oluwayemisi Mary, and the Public Relations Officer, Okoye Ogochukwu.

With this, a total of 955 students were accredited, with 499 students casting their votes. Accordingly, eleven (11) candidates contested for nine (9) executive positions, including President, Vice President, General Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, Treasurer, Social and Welfare Director, Public Relations Officer (PRO), Financial Secretary, and Sports Director.

The winners and their vote counts were as follows:

Adeyefa Ebenezer - President (452 votes)

Okunola Abigeal - Vice President (216 votes)

Ayorinde David John - General Secretary (458 votes)

Fanibe Emmanuel Eniola - Public Relations Officer (PRO) (437 votes)

Suliamon Abdulbasit Ayomide - Financial Secretary (412 votes)

Jimoh Pelumi Azeez - Sports Director (422 votes)

Emmanuel Udeoeyo Ubong - Treasurer (394 votes)

Jaiyeola Abdulmuhiz Timileyin - Assistant General Secretary (431 votes)

Adeboye David Ademola - Social and Welfare Director (405 votes)

Adewuyi Oluwayemisi Mary, the Electoral Chairperson, noted that the election exceeded expectations, with a voter turnout higher than in previous sessions. She expressed gratitude to the commission members for their dedication in achieving this milestone. However, one candidate, Michael Timileyin Samuel, was disqualified for failing to submit the necessary documents required for eligibility.

The successful implementation of the e-voting system demonstrated the faculty’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in governance, marking a significant step forward in modernising the electoral process.

OSISANWO BECOMES FULL PROFESSOR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Zenas Olanipekun Dr. Ayo Osisanwo of the Department of English, University of Ibadan has received his promotion to become a full Professor, effective October 1st, 2025 . He is now Professor Ayodele A. Osisanwo. His field cuts across Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis.
