 ‎NASELS UI Kick-Starts Her Department Week with Financial Summit

The National Association of Students of English and Literary Studies, University of Ibadan (NASELS UI), kick-starts her departmental week themed EUPHORIA with a Financial Summit on November 3, 2025. 

‎In commemoration of the week, the NASEL executives led by Afolabi Gloria Ayobayo, on the first day of the week, organised a Financial Summit, themed Budgeting 101: Mastering Money Management as a Student (MMM 3.0),‎ to advise students on how to achieve financial freedom and manage their budgets by understanding the basic difference between needs and wants, as well as saving towards future occurrences.

‎The event hosted by Afolabi Gloria Ayobayo and Salahudeen Abdulsalam, the President and Financial Secretary respectively, featured Bioku Joshua Oluwapelumi, the Treasurer of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UI’SU), as the guest speaker and two panelists, Adeyemi Jesunifemi and Omolanle Oladokun, a 400-level student of Communication and Language Arts who currently serves as the Financial Secretary of Queen Hall, and a final-year student of Economics who serves as the President of the Student Finance Club, University of Ibadan, respectively.

‎During his speech, Joshua advised attendees to balance their needs and wants, manage their budgets effectively, and create sources of income. ‎“You need to be disciplined and strict with your budget to avoid overspending. Ensure you create a source(s) of income by learning skills. Budgeting is about disciplining yourself to know what you want and what you need,” Joshua stated.

Both panelists strongly advised students to avoid embracing online loans, to save towards unforeseen future responsibilities, and to start investing in shares, no matter how small.

‎As the event progressed, one of the distinguished lecturers in the Department of English, Dr. Charles Akinsete, stepped in, offered his appreciation and advised students to actively participate in events like this. ‎“Nothing can take away your value and significance as students of the Department of English. I want you to have it in mind that what you require to succeed and excel is already within you. What you need is discipline and focus, and nothing can stop you. When it comes to organisations within your department, please take them seriously, attending programs, dinners and others are important,” Dr. Charles remarked.

‎The event also featured a question-and-answer session during which both panelists responded to questions raised by the Vice President, Shokunbi Evangelen and other attendees.

‎In her closing remark, Olatunbosun Oluwaseun, the Social Minister of the department, appealed to all Naselites to attend the remaining events lined up for the week.

 DR. AYODELE A. OSISANWO BECOMES FULL PROFESSOR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Zenas Olanipekun Dr. Ayo Osisanwo of the Department of English, University of Ibadan has received his promotion to become a full Professor, effective October 1st, 2025 . He is now Professor Ayodele A. Osisanwo. His field cuts across Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. In an interview with the NASELS Press, he admitted that the validation process started a year ago, but the journey itself involved burning the midnight oil, considering the number of papers he had to write and submit for assessment. When asked how he feels about the promotion, he said, “attaining the professorate is usually something of joy, something one prays about and something many desire." He is grateful to have achieved the great feat in a year stating the fact that the process is not usually easy.”  Professor Osisanwo is a widely published lecturer whose research has appeared in both national and international journals.

NASELS Press Holds Picnic and Handover Ceremony, Unveils New Editorial Board By Esther Ogunleye  The Nigerian Association of English and Literary Studies (NASELS) Press held its picnic and handover ceremony on 21st December, 2025, marking the official transition from the outgoing editorial board to the newly elected executives. The event, beginning with the press prayer, combined fun activities with formal proceedings, bringing together members of the press in a relaxed but composed atmosphere. It served both as a celebration of the outgoing team’s efforts and a call to greater responsibility for the new leadership. During the handover session, the outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Oluwafeyisayo, charged the incoming board to uphold the values of diligence and excellence that define the NASELS Press, describing the appointment as “a call unto greater works.” According to her, the press should continue to uphold journalism and publish relevant quality articles.
