University of Ibadan Emerges as Nigeria’s Best University in 2026, Times Higher Education

Nigeria’s Premier University, the University of Ibadan, has emerged as the best university in the country in 2026, according to the evaluation and assessment by Times Higher Education (THE).

According to the organisation, the University of Ibadan and the University of Lagos occupy the top positions among Nigerian universities, with Covenant University, ranked best in 2025, relegated to third position alongside Bayero University in the 2026 rankings.

The total number of universities ranked globally is 2,191 from 115 countries. As stated on the organisation’s website: “Trusted worldwide by students, academics, governments, and industry experts, the list of the best universities in the world includes 2,191 institutions from 115 countries and territories.”

The organisation further states that it uses five core pillars of evaluation: teaching quality, research environment, research quality, international outlook and industry engagement.

According to THE, “The list highlights the top universities in Nigeria, scored based on a thorough evaluation that examines key areas such as teaching quality, research excellence, industry partnerships, and international outlook. The methodology behind THE’s rankings is trusted globally by students, academics, policymakers and industry leaders.”



Globally, the University of Oxford retains the number one position for the tenth consecutive year, driven by a strong research environment score, while the University of Cape Town is ranked the best in Africa and 164th worldwide.

In the course of gathering this report, a NASELS correspondent observed that the former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Idowu Olayinka, posted this remarkable milestone on his personal Facebook handle.

OSISANWO BECOMES FULL PROFESSOR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Zenas Olanipekun Dr. Ayo Osisanwo of the Department of English, University of Ibadan has received his promotion to become a full Professor, effective October 1st, 2025 . He is now Professor Ayodele A. Osisanwo. His field cuts across Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. In an interview with the NASELS Press, he admitted that the validation process started a year ago, but the journey itself involved burning the midnight oil, considering the number of papers he had to write and submit for assessment. When asked how he feels about the promotion, he said, “attaining the professorate is usually something of joy, something one prays about and something many desire."
