The University of Ibadan Students’ Union Backs SSANU, NASU Strike, Raises Alarm Over Student Hardship

The University of Ibadan Students’ Union (UISU) on the 5th of May, 2026, has declared its solidarity with the ongoing industrial action by the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), while expressing concern over the growing hardship faced by students as the strike continues.


In a statement released on Tuesday, the student body affirmed its support for the unions’ demand for fair treatment and institutional justice, stressing that “an injustice to one is an injustice to all.”


Despite this support, the Union noted that the timing of the strike occurring in the middle of the academic semester has significantly disrupted student welfare and daily life on campus.


The statement highlighted several pressing challenges currently affecting students, including irregular electricity and water supply across the university, the shutdown of essential services such as the University Health Centre and restricted movement leading to general hardship.


“We must highlight that this strike… has severely compromised student welfare,” the statement read, emphasising that students should not bear the brunt of unresolved disputes between institutional stakeholders.


The Union then called on the Federal Government and relevant authorities to take immediate steps to resolve the crisis. It urged all parties involved to engage in “urgent, sincere and constructive dialogue with the striking unions and to address all outstanding concerns promptly to restore normalcy” on campus.

OSISANWO BECOMES FULL PROFESSOR AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH Zenas Olanipekun Dr. Ayo Osisanwo of the Department of English, University of Ibadan has received his promotion to become a full Professor, effective October 1st, 2025 . He is now Professor Ayodele A. Osisanwo. His field cuts across Pragmatics and Discourse Analysis. In an interview with the NASELS Press, he admitted that the validation process started a year ago, but the journey itself involved burning the midnight oil, considering the number of papers he had to write and submit for assessment. When asked how he feels about the promotion, he said, “attaining the professorate is usually something of joy, something one prays about and something many desire."
